Happy birthday, Katie

Oh, mercy, how we love this little girl. She is such a loving sweetheart. She really is. Really. Well, yeah, she can be a moody little tyrant, too. For the last several months, I have been gritting my teeth and telling myself, "She's about to turn four; we're almost out of this three-year-old mess." And when we were really having a three-year-old day, I would actually count the days until her birthday and tell her she had until noon on the 29th to turn back into a human kid. I think we turned a corner a couple of weeks ago, but don't quote me because I don't want to jinx myself.

Miss Birthday Thing woke up at 5:00 this morning and we had a funny little conversation...
Mommy: "Happy birthday, Katie!"
Katie, patiently: "Mommy, it's not my birthday yet; my birthday is soon."
Mommy: "Oh. I can't believe I have a four year old daughter!"
Katie, patiently: "Mommy, mine am not your daughter. Call me Katie, a girl kid."
Mommy (wondering who exactly to attribute the c-section scar and gray hairs to, in that case): "Hmmm. Well, Katie, a girl kid, how does it feel to be four?"
Katie, patiently: "Mommy, mine am going to be five on my birthday."
Mommy: "Katie, let's go back to sleep for a while."

Stay tuned for our next episode of The Sky is Blue/Mommy, you're wrong.

I can't believe she is a four-year-old, girl-kid. She definitely seems to keep your life interesting. I can't wait to see her, and all of you this summer.

Happy Birthday, Katie!
