Will the guilty party please step forward?

Katie got a birthday card this year (last year? Whatever! November 2007) that she especially loves. It was a three-paneled card with various drawings of cats (mermaid kitty, princess kitty & fairy kitty) . And--this is the brilliant part--on the back side are the same three cats, ready to be colored in by the lucky recipient. Katie carefully colored each one, flipping back and forth to make sure she was using the same colors in the same places. When she was finished, she carefully folded it back up and put it in her desk.

Today she pulled it back out and told me solemnly, "This is my important workbook; it has all the...WHO MARKED ON THIS??!" (How I wish I had an audio clip of this to share with you. She was positively bellowing.)

"You did, sweetie, you did," I assured her hurriedly. "Don't you remember coloring all the pictures? It looks great."

"No," she said venomously. "Here. These...these...marks." (Again, would that you could hear the disdain in her voice!)

I looked closer. She was right. Someone had marked on her card. It said, "Happy birthday, Katie! We love you! Susan, Beau & Bryn"

You'll be relieved to know that she completely relaxed after I translated the offending marks for her. "Oh. Well, isn't that nice."

Before I got to the punchline, I was TERRIFIED to know that I was the one. Glad to know that she's okay with such an offense--when translated.

Love you!
