William caught four caterpillars a few weeks ago when our yard was absolutely crawling with them. He carefully placed them in his bug catcher and added a handful of dry grass "so they would feel at home." (Note to self: look into getting a terrarium. Child should learn how to replicate an environment a bit more closely.)
Three of the caterpillars spun cocoons. The last one, I suppose, was far too comfortable in his new plastic home to bother. Slacker.
This morning when we checked on them, two cocoons were missing. It was a mess in there; imagine a small-scale caterpillar frat party. When we looked in the top of the bug catcher, we had two beige-colored moths. I cannot remember when I've seen William and Katie more excited. They were running in three directions apiece, squealing and trying to figure out what to do first. Eventually we made it into the back yard, removed the lid and watched as they fluttered away quietly.
Pretty cool.
