I Need A Vacation

Last night I spent almost fifteen whole minutes trying to figure out the difference in my daughter's and niece's ages. Katie was born in November 2002; Bryn was born in October, 2004. Okay, wait. Now that I've typed it, it looks ridiculously easy. It was well after midnight and I was trying to do it in my head and ... wait. That doesn't make me look any smarter. This is what was throwing me: Katie was born at the very end of November, and Bryn was born toward the beginning of October and I was trying to adjust for that, again in my head. There was this whole big story problem in my head, and I was trying to figure out how Katie was in February 2005 and subtract from that how old Bryn was in February 2005. And if a train left Pittsburgh traveling west at 120 miles an hour... Ack!!

I was really struggling with this--is it just over two years' or just under two years' difference??-- so I sat down to work it out on paper. OK, let's figure out how many months Katie had been alive when Bryn was born. I was so out of it, I decided the best way to do that would be to write the months down and then check them off as I counted.

(Seriously, if you're not worried about my sanity by now, you're about to be.) This is what I wrote:
Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Dueter

I stopped, not because I realized I was writing the books of the Bible, but because Deuteronomy is "eu" not "ue." That realization is what jarred me into noticing that Deuteronomy is "eu" and oh, yeah, not a month in the first place.

I still don't have an answer to my birthday story problem, but I decided I'm content to estimate.

You say neurotic like it's a bad thing.

I've noticed that if you tell me that you have a weird little quirk, I immediately adopt it as my own. So if you have any little neurotic twitches, please for the love of God, don't tell me. I now have so many it's hard to keep track.

For example, when visiting Scott's family over Christmas, my sister-in-law asked me to hand her a glass out of the cabinet. I had been passing out plastic tumblers to the kids, so I handed her one. She told me, "No, a glass glass. I have this thing about drinking out of plastic." Until that moment, it had never crossed my mind to not like plastic glasses, but by golly, I have not grabbed a plastic glass since.

Similarly, a friend told me she never drinks the last bit of milk; she'll open a new gallon and leave the last of the other gallon for somebody else to finish. I have no idea why she does that; maybe she once had a roommate that drank out of the jug. But now I've got it in my head that the last bit of milk in the container is undesirable, if not downright unfit for human consumption. I keep meaning to ask her how she knows when she's gotten to the icky milk. And is it okay to give my kids the icky milk? I have a hunch that it's not okay if they're just drinking it straight, but I'm undecided if it's okay for cereal. And is it presumptuous of me to have hunches on the details of someone else's quirk?

Some quirks skip a generation. My mother and daughter are both convinced that bathroom water tastes different from kitchen water. I think they both taste...wet, but whatever. Who am I to argue with someone's sincerely held belief? I'll tell you who I am; I'm the tired mama tromping back downstairs between bedtime stories to fetch a glass of water with ice. In a glass glass, thank you very much.

3 Random Things Tag

My friend Jacquelyn at Growing Hearts in the Fish Bowl tagged me to list three random things about myself. Here's what I came up with:

1. I got my second (ever) pedicure on Friday and my toenails are currently a charming, funky shade of PURPLE. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Honestly, when I catch sight of them, my first thought is that they look like ten little bruises.

2. I've recently gotten addicted to the show "Without A Trace." It's in reruns on TNT (Yeah, I know: what isn't in reruns on TNT??). Every time I see the opening credits, I think, "Anthony LaPaglia? Daphne's boorish brother on Frasier? Huh. Weird. He makes such a smooth FBI agent." Pretty much verbatim, I think that.

3. We have a perpetual calendar in our schoolroom. I typically get around to changing the month around the 18th. There is also a piece to the calendar that helps kids learn the days of the week. It says "Today is ___________, Tomorrow will be _____________. Yesterday was _________________. " It's been "Wednesday" for about seven months now. I'm not even exaggerating. I am, however, completely diligent in changing the season card on the very day that the new season starts.

I am going to tag Susan, Zoe and Amy to reveal their randomness.

10/20/30

I just saw a "tag" I've never seen before, so I'm taking it upon myself to do it. You just share what you were doing 10, 20 and 30 years ago. This was particularly appealing to me because today is my birthday. I honestly haven't stopped to figure out what was going on then, so here's hoping I come up with something interesting once I do the math.

10 years ago: I turned 27 on this date in 1997. Scott and I had been married 5 months, and had just come back from a Thanksgiving trip to Oregon. It was a pretty miserable trip. One of my beloved sisters-in-law was still coming to terms with the stillbirth of her daughter, and I wanted so badly to be of comfort to her in some small way. I was extremely, helplessly aware that I had not experienced anything that could remotely clue me in on what she was going through. We were staying at my in-laws' home, and there was something "off" in the air there, too. It was a palpable tenseness, and I couldn't figure it out. Did they totally hate me? We did get away by ourselves for lunch in Salem one day, where my mother-in-law was playing Christmas music at the mall. At first I was relieved that she seemed so much happier and more relaxed; maybe she didn't hate me after all. Then, in one of those horrible flashes of clarity, I realized what was "off" and I spent the rest of the weekend hoping that flash of clarity was wrong and that she did, in fact, simply hate me, and I would go back to Albuquerque and everything would be fine.

20 years ago: I turned 17 in 1987. Was this the year I had the surprise party at Hunan? I *think* it was; that was either '87 or '88. I was dating a guy named Bryan, who was supposed to deliver me to Hunan at the proper time. I was pretty sure that something was up, so just to amuse myself, I tried to see how many ways I could screw up his simple assignment. "I think I'd rather have Italian food." "I'm not even hungry yet; let's go see 'Three Men and a Baby' first." "Do you mind running me by the mall for just a little Christmas shopping?" I know, I know. I'm awful.

30 years ago: I turned 7 in 1977. I don't specifically remember this birthday. (With a sincere apology to my parents, who I am sure worked hard to make it a memorable birthday and will be crushed that I don't remember the pony and the magician and the cake and...) This was the year that my maternal grandfather died, followed by Elvis Presley, and that is always the first thing I think of whenever 1977 comes up. You know those signs in the grocery store that say, "You must have been born after this date in _____ to purchase alcohol"? Those signs began to bother me in 1998, when people who never even shared the planet with my grandfather or Elvis became old enough to purchase alcohol. And they bother me more every year. People born in 1986 are turning 21 this year. I turned sixteen in 1986. Must go take my Geritol now.

If you want to play, consider yourself tagged. :)

100 Things About Me

It is customary in the blogosphere to post 100 things about oneself when one reaches the 100th-post milestone.

1. I am named after the song "Windy" by the Association. It's one of the songs that instantly puts me in a great mood.
2. I have trouble telling my right from my left. I have to stop and think about it and even then, I get it wrong just about as often as I get it right.
3. I will always think of myself as a Strawberry.
4. I'm a "cat person"
5. who currently happens to own a dog.
6. I'm a bit of a Prairie Muffin wanna-be.
7. Invite me for a scrapbooking getaway. I'll clear my calendar.
8. I think my husband's a hottie.

17. One of my favorite quotes is, "You can never get a book long enough or a cup of tea big enough to suit me." (C.S. Lewis)
18. I have a favorite child.
19. It's not always the same child.
20. Sometimes it's J.B.
21. I once dreamed that I had dinner with Paul Newman. It was an awesome dream.
22. In the same week, I dreamed that my mattress was filled with rats. I woke up screaming and scared the snot out of Scott.
23. I have a small tattoo on my left ankle
24. and what used to be a birthmark on my back. Over the years, it has atrophied into a really weird looking patch of sunken skin. I don't like to wear anything that might show it.
25. I am an ugly cry-er.
26. I have a loud sneeze.
27. After being made aware that some people are annoyed by said sneeze, I started trying to sneeze quietly, but it wasn't as satisfying.
28. My favorite books are Crazy in Alabama and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.
29. Another favorite quote: "To those who have fought for it, freedom has a flavor that the protected will never taste." (Thomas Paine)

35. I despise urban legend emails.
36. But I love get-to-know-you ones.
37. I would like to get my vision corrected (can't think of the name of the surgery)
38. But I'm notoriously squeamish about anyone messing with my eyes, so it'll never happen.
39. My love language is "words of affirmation."
40. My favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
41. I loved being pregnant!
42. I was horrified when one of the midwives casually mentioned the baby sleeping with us.
43. Seven years later, we still have an open bed policy.
44. Except the dog...Scott's not budging on that.
45. I can still remember a nightmare I had when I was about three, and thinking about it makes my heart beat faster, just because I remember how scared I was.
46. I find life very exciting, and it genuinely confounds me that some people don't.
47. I would like to learn to sew and knit,
48. but I won't because I don't have time add reading all the sewing and knitting blogs to the homeschooling, stamping and scrapbooking blogs I already read.

55. Real Coke, please. No Pepsi--ever.
56. If I ever happen to catch "Grease" on tv, I have to stop whatever I'm doing and finish watching it.
57. My sister and I once sat in front of the TV for literally the entire weekend, watching a 48 hour marathon of Stand-up Spotlight on VH-1.
58. Speaking of my sister, when I'm with her, I often laugh until my face hurts.
59. I always say that "A promise is a sacred thing," and I never, ever promise something lightly.
60. I would love, love, love to go to Italy someday.
61. Having my husband in the car with me turns me into a very nervous driver. He doesn't care for it much, either! HA!
62. I don't really like the color yellow. I just never seem to be in the mood for it.
63. I have a plant that I've kept alive and thriving for almost 3 years. That's a record for me.
64. I don't even know what kind of plant it is. That's how brown my thumb is.
65. In general, I prefer gold jewelry to silver jewelry.
66. I volunteered for Hawaii's Race for the Cure for 2 years and absolutely loved it.
67. I love to bake bread.
68. I wouldn't last a day on the Atkins diet.
69. Have you heard of the grapefruit diet? I didn't make it through one meal on that one. I despise grapefruit.
70. I sleep in my contacts even though I know I shouldn't.
71. I don't listen to popular music at all. My sister was astonished that I even knew who Fergie is.
72. I would eat red meat every day if I could.
73. I'm seriously considering a Betty.
74. No matter how awful it feels the next morning, I love staying up later than everybody else and having the house all to myself.
75. A disproportionate number of shirts that I buy for myself are red.
76. I cloth-diapered both my kids. (It's WAY easier than you think!)
77. This year I will be homeschooling both my kids.
78. I can't really swim.
79. I'm currently struggling with the decision of whether to let my hair go gray or fight the inevitable.
80. I like to have A Plan. Once we make A Plan, it takes me 24 hours to adjust to the idea of changing the Plan. At that point, going back to the original Plan is just as unacceptable as changing from it in the first place. This makes my go-with-the-flow husband a little nuts.
81. Actually, now that I typed that all out, I realize I'm a lot more laid-back than I used to be.
82. I hate getting a massage from anybody but Scott. It makes my skin crawl.
83. If I ever get another tattoo, it will be a strawberry.
84. I love to eat soup on rainy days, especially with a grilled cheese sandwich.
85. I will be 37 on my next birthday.
86. I have to force myself to eat breakfast.
87. I am easily distracted by background noise, so I know without a doubt that a career in telemarketing is not for me.
88. I really didn't want to change my name when I got married.
89. Ironically, many of my friends have a tendency to refer to me by my first and last name. (Not when they're talking *to* me, but when they're talking *about* me. Wait, that sounds less than positive. I mean, as in, "Let's call Wendy A* and see if she can go.")
90. I miss the party aspect of selling Pampered Chef.
91. I would gladly be responsible for folding all the laundry in the house, if someone else would do the washing and putting away parts.
92. I generally have pretty thick skin, but I cannot take even the mildest, most constructive criticism from Scott.
93. I have beautiful eyes.
94. I check my email first thing when I wake up and as soon as possible after coming home from anywhere. If my computer had a flashing light for new messages like the phone does, it would add a substantial amount of time to my day.
95. If I were a crayon, I would be red. But my favorite colors are purples and blues.
96. I know a fair bit of French, a lot of American Sign Language, and only a bit of Spanish.
97. I had surgery on my right foot when I was in college to remove a small bone that had mysteriously disintegrated. Still have the scar, and still treat that area very gingerly.
98. I miss the overly-oaked Chardonnays of the '90s.
99. I ate a duck skin sandwich on squooshy white bread--among other things I'd never had, seen or heard of before-- at a celebratory dinner in Hawaii. [Oh my gosh, I just googled duck skin sandwich and found this recipe! The one I had didn't have enough duck meat to register in my memory, but I do remember the scallion brushes as described at the end]

100. I felt significantly more interesting when I started this list than I feel at this moment.

Restless sleep

Last night I dreamed about snow. From DreamMoods.com:

Snow
To see snow in your dream, signifies your inhibitions, repressed/unexpressed emotions and feelings of frigidity. You need to release and express these emotions and inhibitions. You may also be feeling indifferent, alone and neglected. If the snow is melting then it suggests that you are acknowledging and releasing those emotions you have repressed. You are overcoming your fears and obstacles. If the snow is dirty, then it refers to a loss in innocence, impurity and uncleanness. Some aspect of yourself or situation has been tainted.

To dream that you are watching the snow fall, represents a clean start and a fresh, new perspective. It is indicative of spiritual peace and tranquility.

To dream that you are playing in the snow, indicates that you need to set some time for fun and relaxation.

To dream that you find something in the snow, suggests that you are exploring and accessing your unused potential, abilities, and talents. You have uncovered some hidden talent and ability within yourself. It may also indicate forgiving yourself or others.

In my dream, snow was falling, but it was keeping me from where I wanted to go.

DreamMoods.com was not much help on why Elvis, Reba MacIntyre and George Strait were there.
